Abstracts of letters, reports, and related papers from the President, Members of Congress, the Secretary of War, other officials of the War Department, Army officers, and private individuals relating principally to the organization of the Army; appointments, commissions, and promotions of Army personnel; regulations; tactics; activities in and around Army installations; Indian affairs; and many other subjects, which were received by the Office of The Adjutant General either directly or by endorsement. In addition to a brief abstract of the communication received, the writer's name, date of letter, and date of its receipt are given, together with a file number indicating the position of the letter in the Letters Received. This series contains a record of practically all papers received by the Office from November 1814 through September 1861. About this time and later, divisions were established in the Office that were designated to handle specific matters and to keep their own records.
